A new approach to improving treatment adherence
Treatment adherence is one key to promoting wellness in patients who require ongoing medication therapies. More adherent patients are generally healthier, experiencing improvements in quality of life, with greater symptomatic relief, and require less interventional care such as unscheduled ER visits, or additional nursing assistance. As former surgeon general of the United States, C. Everett Koop, famously observed, “Drugs don't work in patients who don't take them.”
“Drugs work better when patients are encouraged and reminded to take them.”
While there are many issues that can impact adherence, effective adherence management depends in part on informing and engaging patients. For organizations, a broad range of operational efficiencies, healthcare-scorecard related ratings and even improved ability to successfully market services, are dependent on communicating effectively with patients to improve adherence.
